Jewish settlement - Roudnice nad Labem

The oldest Jewish settlement was located southeast of the Roudnice chateau, and can be traced back to the middle of the 16th century.

In the 17th century, 50 Jewish families lived in Roudnice. In 1613, they were forced to relocated to Židovská Street (today's Havlíčkova). At the end of the 18th century, about 400 Jews lived in Roudnice. The oldest Jewish cemetery was adjacent to the first settlement and was abolished along with it around 1615. The second cemetery, now called the cemetery one, was established shortly afterwards near the newly established ghetto. Some tombstones from the first cemetery were transferred here. For example, Becalel ben Sinai (1621), nephew of a rabbi called Maharal, also known as Rabbi Löw, is buried here.

A tour of the Jewish cemetery must be booked by phone (tel: +420 416 810 761) or by e-mail (podripskemuzeum@seznam.cz) at least one week in advance.
