Trip to Říp

Říp Mountain with its Romanesque rotunda rises from the Polabská plain 5 km south of Roudnice nad Labem. At the top stands a chapel dedicated to St. George, the patron saint of the Přemyslids, and St. Vojtěch, the patron saint of the Czech lands. Inside you can see a statue of St. George with a dragon.

There are several marked hiking trails leading to the top of Říp. If you choose the route from Roudnice nad Labem , you should stick to the blue tourist signs. It will lead you along the so-called Čechova alley, which offers a stop in a pleasant pub Štípárna in Vesce, and further to Rovný pod Řípem. From there, you continue towards the foot of Říp Mountain and climb through the forest to the summit. From the top viewpoints of Říp - Mělnická, Pražská and Roudnická - you will enjoy far panoramic views of the Bohemian Central Highlands or the deep forests of the Kokořínsko region. The return journey can be made on scooters, which you can rent here and return comfortably in Roudnice nad Labem. One of the final destinations of the scooter ride can be the information centre, which is the starting point for the sightseeing tour of the Romanesque Castle and Lobkowicz Castle.

Climb to Říp according to the Czech forefather

According to legend, the forefather of Bohemia and his retinue ascended Říp. Today the site is one of the basic symbols of Czech statehood. However, archaeological findings show that Říp attracted attention much earlier. At the very top, at an altitude of 456 metres above sea level, stands the Romanesque rotunda of St. George and St. Vojtěch. The building was restored in 1126 by the Bohemian Prince Soběslav I to celebrate his victory over the German King Lothar III in the famous Battle of Chlumec. However, its current appearance is the result of several reconstructions from the 19th to the 21st century. Inside, there is a sandstone slab with a relief representation of the fight between St. George and the dragon by Bernard Otto Seeling from 1870 and a statue of St. George created in 1881 by sculptor Eduard Veselý. Academic sculptor Stanislav Hanzík made a significant contribution to the interior decoration. Every year the St. George's Pilgrimage is held here.
