Litoměřice Wine Trail

The area through which the Litoměřice Wine Trail route passes is undoubtedly one of the richest in terms of nature and one of the most attractive tourist attractions in the Protected Landscape Area of the Central Bohemian Uplands.

The official beginning of the Litoměřice Wine Trail is in the yard of Litoměřice Castle, but you may join it anywhere and follow just some parts of it. Its total length is over 15 kilometres and it runs on both banks of the Labe river.

There are nine information boards along the trail that will guide you through the interesting places of the wine-producing region of Litoměřice. From Litoměřice, it will take you to the top of Radobýl hill, where you will find one of the boards. It continues to Žalhostice, Velké Žernoseky, then - taking a ferry - to Malé Žernoseky, and through Lhotka village to Lovosice where the Litoměřice Wine Trail finishes.

Following the trail, you may have a chance to visit the well-known local wine producers and taste their wines. We believe that you will enjoy the trip and love the wine.

Malé Žernoseky - vineyard of St. Tomas winery

The sixth stop of the Litoměřice wine trail is located near the vineyards of St. Tomas winery.

The vineyards in Malé Žernoseky are located on the Na Dobraji vineyard route and partly also on the slopes of the Oparenské valley. The vineyards originally had a long historical tradition in the area of Malé Žernoseky. Already in the 13th century (1248) local vineyards were first mentioned. In the following centuries, viticulture was a traditional way of living in this area and the Žernosecky vineyards were very fruitful. In the post-war period (since 1948), the viticulture in Malé Žernoseky declined.

In the 1980s, more precisely in 1984, Zdeněk Vybíral Sr. planted several new vineyards in the area. His work was later followed by his son Zdeněk Vybíral Jr., who in 2002 advocated the re-registration of the village of Malé Žernoseky on the list of wine-growing villages. Thanks to this, the wine-growing tradition of Malé Žernoseky was renewed.

These vineyards grow wine species that belong here from a historical point of view and have a strong tradition here. The vineyards are planted mainly with the varieties of Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir. Other wines also grown here, for example, Müller Thurgau and Svatovavřinecké. These are mostly so-called burgundy varieties.

The local family winery of St. Tomáš manages an area of about 8 hectares and processes its wines in the unique cellar of Phannschmidt's farm. The steps of our journey along the Litoměřice wine trail now continues to this farm.

Fun fact: for a very small part in Malé Žernoseky, the vineyards are managed by the painter Pavel Bulín. Its small vineyard with an area of about 0.1 ha is also located on the vineyard Na Dobraji.

WHERE TO CONTINUE NOW?

The wine trail continues around the playground and the municipal office to U Vinárny Street, where the St. Tomas winery and also of course the next stop on our route are located.

If you follow the trail in the opposite direction, then continue to the Elbe and use the seasonal ferry to the road to Velké Žernoseky. During the trip you can admire the terraces of Žernosecky vineyards in the area. Note also their steep slopes, which are unique in their inclination.
