Lovosice – Port

The town of Lovosice is known mainly for its chemical industry. It is certainly a surprise to many that wine grown and produced here.

The first written record of Lovosice is from 1143. Around 1600, Lovosice was promoted to a town. Viticulture has been developing near the city for a long time. The most suitable place for growing vines here are the slopes below Lovos. We have already mentioned them at the previous stop.

It is also interesting from the point of view of viticulture in Lovosice that the first sparkling wine in northern Bohemia was produced here. This wine was made in Lovosice as early as 1845. Johannes Josef Mouzon, who moved to Lovosice from Niederlössnitz in Saxony, took care of it. Johannes Josef Mouzon originally came from Reims, France, and worked in Saxony as the head of a sparkling wine factory. After moving to Lovosice, he attempted to produce the first sparkling wine in the area. He bought 15 barrels of wine from the 1844 harvest and made the first sparkling wine from it. This was then examined in terms of taste and health consequences for consumers. All the researches turned out well and Mozoun's sparkling wine was appreciated for its delicate taste. How long Mouzon made his champagne in Lovosice is not clear from the preserved historical documents. Nevertheless, Lovosice remains the first place in northern Bohemia where champagne-type foamy wine was produced directly from domestic wines.
